I've always had the point and shoot type digital cameras, but I'm moving up in the world. I just purchased a Canon Rebel XS and I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!! I spent a couple hours playing around with it today for the first time and I am absolutely amazed at the quality of the photos, as well as the ease of operation! I would DEFINATELY recommend this camera for anyone looking to enter the world of digital SLR's.

I recently got my first DSLR as well :) I got the Canon Rebel XSi and like Jerri, I love it!! My kit came with an 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS lens and I purchased a 55-200 mm 4.5-5.6 lens at the same time. I should have waited for to purchase the second lens until I knew a bit more about what I was doing, LOL. I definitely would choose a different lense now that I know a bit more about DSLRs. My camera kit also came with a battery grip and an extra battery which I also love. The battery grip gives me something solid to hold onto when I am taking pics and also gives me double the battery life.
The next things on my 'need to have' list are a 50mm f1.4 lens and a speedlite.
I am loving playing with my new camera and have so much to learn.........watch for some photo challenges to come soon!!

I also just recently bought my first DSLR, a Nikon D40 with the 18-55 mm lens and 55-200 mm lens. I haven't ventured too far from Auto but the photos are amazing and I'm enjoying watching for things to take photos of. There is so much out there to capture! Now to learn how to capture GREAT photos....so much to learn.
Can't wait for the challenges, Wendy :D

Mine also came with the 18-55 mm lens. I also purchased a 70-300 mm lens, which is on back order, but I've also decided that now I absolutely NEED a macro lens as well. LOL!

I refuse to use the auto. I am MAKING myself learn it! Hopefully by Tabbie's Sweet 16 party in August I'll be an old pro!

Yay!!!!!!!!!!!! My 75-300 lens just came in and I can't wait to play with it. I'm sitting here looking at a certain tabby cat laying in a patch of sunshine who is about to become very annoyed...Hahahahah!

I can't wait to see your photos!! I have a 55-200 and I love the versatility of it. It is my favourite lens........I think :)
I recently picked up a 50 mm 1.2. I am looking forward to getting good close ups with lots of DOF.

I am still unsure of the Manual mode. When I went to the Mammoth Cave in Kentucky on Monday, once I was in there in the dark, I realized I'd forgotten to set my camera properly to get photos in the dimmly lighted areas!! I missed most of the tour info because I was playing with my camera. Many of my shots are blurry and either too dark or overexposed! I was upset with myself for not thinking about it before I entered LOL
I did get some good shots but I'll post a couple here and maybe you can help me figure out what I should have done. :001_wub: The photos were taken before I changed the setting to "Night" photos in the auto mode. That helped a bit but I know the Manual modes would have been better if I knew exactly how to set my settings ;) I did change the ISO to the highest 1600 after a few bad pics and tried the manual but not too much success.

Marcie, upload the full size , straight out of the camera photos. Put them in the 'Help my Pic forum' :) I can't read all the photo info off the resized photos.

Try RAW.......do you have your camera set so the EXIF info stays in the photo?? There is no info in the jpg at all. Maybe you can get the info off your camera if the photo is still on it.
